The women in these parts. Ancient.
Twisted like krumholz near the treeline.
This one, keeper of the cemetery,
hunches against the perpetual gale,
Arctic plague that has not ceased
from Magellan’s time to this.
In this hemisphere’s
summer sun and wind, she shrivels,
a desiccated leaf. Even as she points
out how beautiful the flowers,
(they are but wind-worn petunias) on the graves,
I tuck the label on my handbag
under my arm, pull gloves
over cruise-manicured nails,
