We Are Not the World

We need to look beyond our personal experiences

It’s human nature for us to form opinions and take actions based on our personal experiences, but contrary to the title of the 1985 song that raised $50 million for African famine relief, we (individually) are NOT the world.

There is a huge world beyond our individual space with information that may prompt us to view things differently if we take the time to consider it.

For example …

Recently in a chat with a friend about face masks, I commented that I wondered how much research has been done on the damage masks do to communication and relationships between adults as well as development in children.

She said that her grandchildren have been wearing masks and they’re fine.

That pretty much ended the discussion.

If she says her grandchildren are fine wearing masks, then I’m sure they are. But should our mask practices be based on two or three children? Of course not.

Student loans are another hot-button issue greatly influenced by our personal situation. If you’re struggling to pay back your loans, if you can’t afford to buy a home or start a family because of your student loan debt burden, you probably take a different view of student loan…
