As I write this, the motive of the shooter in the Nov. 19, 2022 attack at Club Q in Colorado Springs has not been released.

While I want to know that, what I want to focus on right now is this:

When the shooting started, someone in the club had the presence of mind to stop the shooter.

I live in Central Florida where memories of the horrible massacre at Pulse nightclub in 2016 are still vivid and painful. Shortly after that shooting, I heard a terrorism and security expert talk about what to do if you find yourself in an active shooter situation.

Essentially, he said, if you can flee, you should. And he explained how to do that. But if you can’t escape, you should do what you can to stop the shooter.

That presentation led to my Conversations book, How to Survive an Active Shooter: What You do Before, During and After an Attack Could Save Your Life.
