After Four Decades, I Canceled the Orlando Sentinel
Our long-term relationship has come to an end
I did something this week I never thought I’d do: I canceled my subscription to the local newspaper.
Getting the newspaper has been a lifelong tradition for me. I grew up reading the paper. My brother even had a paper route back in the day when boys delivered newspapers on their bicycles.
One of the first things I would do when moving to a new place was to arrange for the paper to be delivered. Nearly four decades ago, when I returned to Central Florida, I started a subscription to the Orlando Sentinel.
I easily transitioned from the print to the digital edition several years ago and appreciated the email news alerts and other technological advances. But the company is making too many other changes I don’t appreciate and I’ve had enough.
The proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back was a letter advising me of a 30 percent rate increase with less than a week’s notice.
I tried to access my account online to cancel my subscription that way, but I couldn’t do that. The system wouldn’t allow me to stop the auto-renew or cancel the subscription. I had to call during the hours subscriber…
